Have you ever seen that “Curiosity” picture of the Ice-Burg just barely poking out of the water but in reality, there’s another 200ft below the surface? That’s how I view people. And
in essence, it really is true. There is so little to learn from an introduction. When you start to dig into a man or women’s life, there is so much knowledge and stories to share. And when someone is willing to give some of that knowledge, and share some stories, isn’t it worth it to listen?
That’s what I want to do with my life, broad right? Well it’s just the the idea of it. Investigative Journalism. I mean I think that’s what I want to do but what better place to start then now! I have been to several countries on this continent. Mexico, Brazil, Canada and Puerto-Rico. All of them amazing places and beautiful in their own ways. But as cool as these places have been, the only thing I seem to be interested in is the culture. The culture and ways some of these people grew up leave me in awe. And being able to share it through film would be my dream.
Living in a diverse area like Pullman during school, professors and different leadership roles throughout campus will provide plenty of interesting personal stories. On-top of that, living in Redmond, WA brings in people from around the world. Centering them around our tech savvy town.
Collecting data for this will be the most interesting and hands on part of my page. Handling a camera is no new thing to me either, video production is my passion. Throughout my life I’ve had my lap-top in one and camera in the other.
As mentioned, collecting audio and video tapes for this project will be by far the most interesting. Learning in my life though, people aren’t always open about things until you get them talking about what their passionate or excited about. For my audio portion of the project, I’ll be setting up a phone interview with someone of interest. Vague. I know. But with enough looking and phone calls I’ll be able to find someone in country or even cross continent that might be interested in an interview. With interview questions aimed to encourage them to talk about themselves.
Video interviews should be pretty much the same. With the same questions aimed to making people talk but of course, in a set environment. Possibly even random encounter if the opportunity arises.
Some inspiration includes- https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/59wzg8/brazils-trans-community-is-celebrating-a-defiant-win-in-rio-elections Not necessarily focused on the topic but this sort of journalism is what I aspire to be in.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Kemp Ross Kemp is pretty much my role model. Getting into the most dangerous and ridiculous circumstances just to uncover a story that people need to know about.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world Another piece of media that is focused on sharing information with the world. Maybe not my style or ambitions, but very respected.
