My inspiration came from several places for this project. My earlier ideas
consisted of collages and posters. But soon realizing I was really just drawing
blanks and procrastinating. For days I contemplated on what could represent the
idea of sharing people’s stories. But eventually, it hit me. What is the best
way to tell a story…? A book! The research and picture finding was the
hardest part. I had the idea but now it had to come to fruition. When choosing
the images, I had to make some changes. The images I selected from Flickr for
the photo organization just weren’t working together when it came to choosing
grayscale and which colors to pop so new images had to be found. Eventually the
right set came together. Off-balancing focus from dead center, forcing your
eyes to move around the picture. From the popping colors of the earth in the
background to the letters then to the man playing guitar in the foreground.
Choosing that image to be in the front was no accident. The expression in his
face, the cigarette in his mouth and guitar in hand leaves me with a sense of
curiosity. That is someone who seems to have something valuable locked up in
his head. The rest of the images are mainly to help that sense of curiosity
grow. For example, the women hugging Obama on the right was a victim of Hurricane
Harvey. Losing her home as well as a loved one. Not something you can figure
out till you ask.
The process of photoshopping the image was long and tedious. Having to cut
out each image, changing the opacity and even for some, distorting them as to
appear it is straight out of the book. Learning throughout, effort is nothing
without knowledge of the program. So, a few YouTube videos later on all the
cool functions and different key commands (Mostly ctrl D) I felt like I could
just cruse through.
